There are many technologies which allow access to virtual worlds in the classroom. From VR and augmented reality to detailed virtual worlds, teachers now have an array of tools they can make use of in the classroom. One such tool is Minecraft. Minecraft is a virtual world that allows students to experience concepts that might otherwise be impossible to explore in the real world.

But what are the gains of using virtual worlds in the classroom? A student’s experiences within a virtual world allows them to develop understandings that might otherwise be impossible to explore in the real world. From touring far of lands with an iPad, to exploring the impacts or resource management and sustainability in a Minecraft city, virtual worlds will have a tremendous impact on students in future classrooms. Minecraft is just one way in which teachers can experience the power of such transformative technology today.
