William Grame is 12 year old from Canberra who started designing a ground breaking product when he was 10. Will is a Type 1 diabetic and he drew on inspiration from his own life involving a problem, he was always in trouble for not disposing of his blood test strips. He attended a 3 day youth hackathon event and with the help of industry leaders and teachers, he got to work designing and manufacturing a strip disposal unit with the help of a 3D printer. He won the top prizes at the Hackathon and purchased his first laptop.
William and his disposal unit also gained an award in Origin Energy’s littleBIGidea competition, a trip to NASA in the United States. His invention has also seen him connect with industry leaders, start a company called Diabetes Domination, and earnt him an internship with Muffin Break. He has partnered with a Canberra start-up company The Creative Element to support the ongoing design and development of the prototype. But most importantly, Will has created a solution that has the potential to make everyday life easier (and tidier) for many people around the world.
