Creating Digital Solutions with physical tech

Electronics and robotics are an exciting way to address the Creating Digital Solutions strand of the Digital Technologies Curriculum, through project work.


This day will:

  • expose teachers to examples of real projects in secondary schools,
  • provide hands-on practice through a team Making project, following an abbreviated Design Thinking strategy.

Notes:

  • based on information from attendees, we will be using an Arduino kit as the main tool for the hands-on parts of this event, but examples of other tools will be available,
  • digital manufacturing (3D printing and laser cutting) will not be covered in this event.

The workshop is targeted at teachers of Years 7-10. 


About the presenters 

Roland Gesthuizen is a STEM Method Lecturer at Monash University, Melbourne. Vice President of the Mag-Net association for STEM Educators, Journal Editor for the DLTV, ACCELN Cohost and Group Leader for 1st The Basin Scouts. Many years ago Roland worked as a research scientist with the Orica, explosives division. Internet pioneer; first email from a US President, first to help built a website for an Australian public utility and operated an EarthDial used with the NASA Mars Rovers for Planetary Society. Enjoys tinkering in Makerspaces, challenging STEM thinking and learning new things.


Nathan Alison taught Digital Technologies, VCE Computing and Software Development in Victoria for 11 years before beginning work for DLTV. 

He brings a background in Computer Systems Engineering and years of hobby coding, as well as a keen desire to help teachers with more complex Computer Science concepts through clear explanations and relevant activities.
